Dreaming about running but not moving
Why can you not run properly in dreams?
One of the most universally recognised dream sensations: legs heavy, running through treacle, moving with enormous effort and no speed.
There is a plausible physiological account. During REM sleep the body is largely paralysed. Motor commands are generated but blocked at the brainstem. The proposal is that the dreaming mind issues the command to run, receives no feedback that the body has moved, and constructs the experience of running without progress.
It is not proven, but it fits the phenomenology unusually well.
Where this reads well
Recognising it can be a lucidity trigger. It is such a specific wrongness that some dreamers use it as a dream sign.
Where it is harder
The frustration, which dreamers report as worse than the fear.
Worth asking yourself
Was it my legs, or the ground, or the air? Did I notice how strange it was?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
