The Luminous Archive
Dream protectors
Held to exactly the same evidence standard as the Bestiary. This is an archive of how people experience and describe recurring benevolent dream figures, not a claim that spirits, angels or the dead objectively visit anyone.

Widely reported
A substantial body of independent reports across different communities, platforms or time periods.
- Dream protectorThe Companion AnimalA pet: very often one that has died, appearing calm, well and present. Extremely commonly reported, consistently comforting, and one of the most under-acknowledged forms of grief there is.Widely reported
- Dream protectorThe Protective AncestorA deceased relative appearing in a reassuring or protective role. The most commonly reported figure in this archive, well documented in bereavement research, and consistently described as comforting.Widely reported
Repeated pattern
Multiple independent reports sharing a consistent cluster of characteristics.
- Dream protectorThe Guardian AnimalAn animal that positions itself between the dreamer and a threat. Dogs dominate the reports, and unlike most figures in this archive the guardian animal is usually described in detail.Repeated pattern
- Dream protectorThe Helpful StrangerAn unknown figure who helps briefly and practically (directions, a hand, the right information) and then is gone. Modest, extremely common, and almost never remembered clearly.Repeated pattern
- Dream protectorThe Luminous FigureA figure described primarily as light rather than as a person. Reported across all belief positions, remembered for years, and consistently described as benevolent and non-communicative.Repeated pattern
- Dream protectorThe One Who IntervenesA figure that appears at the worst point of a nightmare and stops it. Rarely described, rarely identified, and reported with unusual emotional force: the most structurally interesting entry in this archive.Repeated pattern
Sleep-paralysis associated
Reports occur mainly during the boundary between sleep and waking, where a well-described physiological mechanism already accounts for much of the experience.
Emerging pattern
A small number of independent but notable reports. Interesting; not yet a pattern.
- Dream protectorThe Dream GuideA figure who recurs across dreams and appears to know the dream is a dream. Reported almost entirely by people who practise lucid dreaming, which is both the interesting part and the problem.Emerging pattern
- Dream protectorThe Guiding ChildA child who leads the dreamer somewhere, calmly and without explanation. Uncommon, distinctive, and reported with an odd absence of the anxiety children usually produce in dreams.Emerging pattern
- Dream protectorThe Wise ElderAn older figure who conveys understanding rather than instruction. Heavily shaped by Jungian ideas that have escaped into general culture, which makes clean reports hard to come by.Emerging pattern
The other wing
The figures people report being frightened by, documented to the same standard and with the same scepticism.
The Nocturnal Bestiary →What this is, and is not
This is an archive of how people experience and describe recurring benevolent dream figures. It is not a claim that spirits, angels or the dead objectively visit anyone, and it is not a general angel or mythology directory.
One finding runs through the whole wing and is worth stating up front: people remember being helped far more clearly than they remember who helped them. That asymmetry is consistent, it is the opposite of what the Bestiary shows, and it is the most interesting thing here.
