• Hands, then the gardenChecked my hands out of habit and there were six fingers on the left one, which is when I knew. I went outside rather than trying anything clever, and stood in a garden that was not mine while the light kept changing. Then up over the fence, badly, the way I always go up. Four minutes maybe. Longest I have held one this year.

• A wedding where nobody could find the bride, including the brideEveryone was very calm about it. There was a seating plan and a marquee and a woman going round with a clipboard asking people if they had seen her. At some point I understood that I was the one getting married and that this was fine, and then the cake situation became the main problem.

• The corridor that came back to the same doorA hotel with a plan that does not close. I kept walking and arriving back at 412 from the other direction, and in the dream I could see exactly why it happened and it made complete sense. I have tried to draw it twice since and it does not work.

• Someone at the foot of the bed, and I was not frightenedSame as always: awake, pinned, figure at the end of the bed. This time I remember thinking, fine, do what you like. It went when the heating came on. First time in years I have not spent the next hour with the light on.

• A room I had never seenThere was a door in the hallway of my parents’ house that has never been there. Behind it was a whole room with a window looking out at nothing I recognised. I was delighted rather than frightened.

  Awake, unable to move, and then someone lifting it off meThe usual weight, and then a very clear sense of somebody else in the room taking it off my chest, the way you would lift a bag off someone. I could move straight afterwards. I do not think anything was actually there. I would still like to know why my brain built that.

• A dog stood between me and itSame estate, same thing behind me, and then a black dog came out from between two cars and stopped, facing past me. I did not see what happened after that. I woke up calm, which has never once happened with this dream.

• Letting myself fall on purposeWent off the edge of a multi-storey deliberately, to find out whether the jolt would wake me. It did not. I landed, nothing happened, and the dream carried on in a car park. I have wanted to try that for about two years.

• Our old road, except the trees had grown up properlyThe street I lived on until I was fourteen, exactly right, apart from the trees being the size they would actually be now rather than the size they were then. Nobody was about. I walked to the end and back twice and that was the whole dream.

• Flying badly over the Sainsbury’s car parkAbout twelve feet up, no higher, doing a sort of breaststroke. I could not get over the trolley bay. A man loading his boot looked up and then went back to what he was doing, which felt about right.

• The bridge stopped halfwayWalking out over water on something that simply ended, no barrier, no sign, the far side visible but not connected to anything. I did not fall. I stood at the end for what felt like ten minutes, deciding.
