Letting myself fall on purpose

11 July 2026

Went off the edge of a multi-storey deliberately, to find out whether the jolt would wake me. It did not. I landed, nothing happened, and the dream carried on in a car park. I have wanted to try that for about two years.

The hypnic jerk and the falling-in-a-dream thing are usually treated as two separate events that got associated after the fact. The jerk happens at sleep onset rather than in REM. So falling deliberately mid-dream probably would not trigger it, which matches what you got.

Before you respond

  • No diagnosing. Not their mental health, not their relationship, not their body.
  • No certainty. "This might connect to…" rather than "this means…"
  • Nothing that predicts a death, an illness or a disaster. Ever.
  • No encouraging paranoia about someone in the dreamer's life.
  • Say which tradition you are drawing on, if you are drawing on one.
  • Content warnings on anything graphic.
  • Personal belief is welcome. Personal belief presented as established fact is not.

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
