Dreaming that you cannot fly any more
Why can you sometimes not fly in a dream when you know you can?
Reported almost exclusively by people who fly in dreams regularly. You know it is possible (you have done it before, in other dreams) and this time it will not work.
That knowledge is what makes the scenario distinct. It requires dream memory of other dreams, which is a strange and under-discussed feature of long-term dreaming, and it is one of the few places where a dream refers to your dream history rather than to your waking life.
Frequent lucid dreamers report this most, often as frustration rather than fear.
Where this reads well
Knowing inside a dream that you should be able to fly is close to lucidity. Some people use exactly this as their trigger.
Where it is harder
Frustrating rather than frightening for most people, though repeated failure can sour a dream that was otherwise pleasant.
Worth asking yourself
Did I know I had flown before? What was different this time?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
