Dreaming about darkness
Darkness in dreams is not the absence of an image. Dreamers describe an active inability to see, frequently with light sources that do not work, and that failure is one of the most reliable features of dream perception.

The characteristic report is not blackness but insufficiency. A torch that does not reach, a switch that does nothing, a room that stays dark with the light on.

Moving in the dark is described with a specific care that dreamers remember: hands out, slow steps, and an awareness of a space they cannot verify.

The light switch is among the most reliable reality checks available. Lights in dreams frequently do not respond as expected, and testing one is a documented induction technique.
Some dreamers report darkness as restful and enclosing rather than frightening, and those reports are calm.
Difficult readings
Fear of what cannot be seen is the oldest thing in this database and it does not need explaining.
Where a presence is involved and the dreamer is waking, the sleep paralysis material is the relevant one and the symbolism is not.
Psychological perspectives
Dreams do not simulate illumination. They produce the experience of seeing or of not seeing directly, which is why a lit candle can leave a room dark and a torch can fail to reach anything.
That explains the light switch too, and it is the reason the check works: the dream has no mechanism to make a light behave correctly, so it usually does not.
Threat detection with no input to work on will keep running, which accounts for the sense of presence without content. It is the same structure the mask, the lizard and the faceless-person entries describe.

Light and darkness as a moral pair is one of the most widespread structures in religious and literary language, and it is available to essentially every dreamer.
