What does it mean to dream something is in the darkness?
The most distressing version, and the first thing to check is where in the night it happened.
If you were in your own room, could not move, and were certain somebody was present, that is sleep paralysis, and the bedroom entry explains it fully. The reports are consistent across cultures and centuries and nothing is in the room.
Where it is a dream proper, the presence is known rather than seen, in the same way everything else in this database is known: supplied as a fact with no evidence attached.
Nothing emerges, in the great majority of reports. The dream sustains the expectation, which is what dreams do well, and never produces the thing, which is what they do badly.
