Dreaming about a light switch that does nothing
Why do lights never work in my dreams?
The non-functioning light switch is reported often enough to be a recognised dream sign, and it is one of the standard triggers for realising you are asleep.
The switch does nothing. The torch does not reach. The room stays dark with the light on. Dreamers describe trying repeatedly, which is the same behaviour hands and text produce.
Two things are going on. Switching a light is an action, and actions fail in dreams for the ordinary motor reason. And the lit version of the room would have to be generated, which is a great deal of detail demanded at once from a dream that had not needed it.
That is why darkness in dreams is not blackness but insufficiency: an active inability to see rather than an absence of image.
Where this reads well
A genuinely reliable lucidity cue, and one that dreamers are already interacting with when it happens.
Where it is harder
Being unable to light a space you are already uneasy about is a specific and effective way to make a dream worse.
Worth asking yourself
Did the switch do anything? Did I try more than once? Was the darkness black, or just unlit?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
