Dreaming about screaming but making no sound
Why can you not scream in a dream?
You open your mouth and nothing comes. It is one of the most frequently reported dream experiences there is, and one of the few with a clean physiological account.
During REM the body is paralysed. Motor output is actively blocked at the brainstem so you do not act out dreams. The command to shout is issued and not answered. What you feel is effort without result, which is exactly what the reports describe.
That explanation covers the mechanism. It does not tell you why the dream needed you to shout, and no page can.
Where this reads well
Knowing the mechanism takes a surprising amount of the horror out of it. This is a body doing its job, not a body failing.
Where it is harder
It is genuinely awful in the moment, and one of the more common reasons people wake distressed.
Worth asking yourself
Who was I trying to call? Did any sound come at all?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
