The same dream again

Dreaming the same thing repeatedly

What does it mean to have the same dream over and over?

The narrative kind, where the events repeat rather than the setting, and it is the rarer of the two.

Recurring dreams skew unpleasant. That is a real finding rather than an impression, and it fits the wider pattern that distressing dreams get recalled and pleasant ones do not.

The useful thing about a recurring dream is not its content. It is that you have a repeated measure. One dream tells you almost nothing; the same dream logged twenty times, against what was happening each week, tells you what it tracks. That is the only reliable way anybody finds out what one of these is about, and it is available to anybody willing to write it down.

Where it follows a real trauma these are not ordinary recurring dreams, and repeated distressing versions are worth taking to somebody qualified rather than working on alone.

Where this reads well

The best-suited dream in the whole database to journalling, for the reason above.

Where it is harder

Dreamers frequently describe feeling stuck with one, which the next scenario is there to address.

Worth asking yourself

What is the same every time? What differs? What was happening on the days it came?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
