Hearing your own name at the edge of sleep
Why do I hear my name called when I am falling asleep?
One of the most widely reported sleep experiences there is, and one of the most reassuring to have explained.
The report is remarkably consistent: a single clear utterance of your name, usually in a familiar voice, at the moment of falling asleep or waking, with nobody there.
This is a recognised phenomenon at the boundaries of sleep and it is not a sign of anything. It happens to enormous numbers of people, most of whom never mention it because they assume it means something is wrong.
Dreamers frequently get up to check, and frequently describe it as the clearest thing they have ever heard while asleep. Both of those are typical rather than unusual.
Where this reads well
The single most reassuring explanation on this page, and people who have carried it privately for years are usually relieved by it.
Where it is harder
Unexplained it is unnerving, chiefly because of how real it sounds.
Worth asking yourself
Was I falling asleep or waking? Whose voice was it? Did I get up to check?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
