Hearing your name

Hearing somebody you know call your name

What does it mean if the voice calling my name is somebody I know?

The voice is often identified as somebody specific, and sometimes as somebody who has died. That is where these reports carry the most weight for the person having them.

What this site can say is that the phenomenon is common, that the voice being familiar is typical rather than remarkable, and that a mind producing a voice will produce one it knows well.

Whether it is contact with the dead is not a question this site can answer, and it will not pretend to. What it can say is that the experience is real, common, and not a symptom of anything wrong.

Dreamers who have had one of these frequently describe it as significant years later. That is worth respecting rather than explaining away.

Where this reads well

Many people describe these as comforting, particularly during bereavement, and the reports hold up over long periods.

Where it is harder

Where the dreamer is grieving, the moment of realising nobody is there can be hard.

Worth asking yourself

Whose voice was it? How did I feel immediately after? Was I falling asleep or waking?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
