Dreaming about gun
The most reported gun dream is one where the gun does not work. Trigger pulls that produce nothing, bullets with no force, and aim that will not hold are described far more often than any shot.

Failure is the dominant report and it is unusually specific. Dreamers describe pulling a trigger and nothing happening, or a bullet leaving the barrel slowly, or being unable to hold the weapon steady.
This belongs with the wider group of dreams where effort produces no effect, which includes running without moving, shouting without sound and punching without force.
Being shot is reported and, as with knives, pain is usually absent. Dreamers frequently describe watching it happen to themselves.
Guns appear far more in the dreams of people in places where guns are present, which is a clear and unsurprising continuity effect.

The effort-without-effect pattern is one of the most consistent findings in dream phenomenology. Motor commands in dreams are not executed, and the dream produces the experience of trying, which is exactly what dreamers describe.
That single mechanism accounts for the failing gun, the slow punch, the legs that will not run and the voice that will not come. Grouping them is far more useful than reading any one as a symbol.
