The overgrown garden produces guilt rather than fear, and it is a mild dream by the standards of this database.
Where something is buried in the garden the reports change character entirely and belong with the material on what is hidden rather than with gardens.

Continuity again does most of the work. People who garden dream about gardens, and the state of the dream garden tends to track the state of the real one.
The guilt reported in the overgrown version is worth noting because it is so specific. It is the guilt of neglect rather than of wrongdoing, and dreamers frequently connect it, unprompted, to something they have been putting off that has nothing to do with a garden.
That connection is the dreamer's and it is worth recording. It is not evidence that the garden means the neglected thing.
Cultural and historical
The enclosed garden is a heavily loaded image in several religious traditions, as an original state, a paradise, or a place set apart. Anyone raised in reach of those traditions carries some of it.
The secular version, the garden as a project that is never finished, is more recent and is probably closer to what most contemporary reports contain.
