Dream places
Setting is the most reliably remembered part of a dream and the most under-examined. Where a dream happens frames everything in it, and a place that keeps returning is usually doing more work than any object in the scene.
- PlaceAbandoned buildingAbandoned buildings combine two strong dream elements: an interior to explore and evidence that people have gone. Reports centre on what was left behind rather than on the building.
- PlaceBeachThe beach is a boundary, and dream reports treat it as one: it is where land meets water, and most beach dreams are about what is happening at that edge rather than about the beach itself.
- PlaceChildhood homeThe most reported dream setting there is. It usually appears altered (extra rooms, wrong layout, doors that were not there) and the alterations are more informative than the house.
- PlaceChurchPlaces of worship in dreams are reported very differently depending on the dreamer's own relationship to religion, which makes this one of the entries where a generic reading is most useless.
- PlaceEndless corridorCorridors that do not end are one of the most consistently described dream architectures. They are transitional space with the destination removed, and they are reported as exhausting rather than frightening.
- PlaceForestForests in dreams are about limited visibility more than about trees. The recurring reports are of not being able to see far, losing a path, and the specific quality of being watched by nothing identifiable.
- PlaceHospitalHospital dreams divide sharply between people with recent hospital experience, for whom they are usually literal, and everyone else, for whom they tend to carry vulnerability and loss of control.
- PlaceHotelHotels are temporary belonging: a room that is yours and is not. Dream reports centre on not being able to find the room, or on the room being wrong when found.
- PlaceSchoolSchool dreams persist for decades after leaving and are overwhelmingly anxious, being unprepared, lost, or back without knowing why. They are one of the best-documented dream types there is.
- PlaceUnderground tunnelUnderground spaces in dreams combine confinement with descent, and reports divide by whether the dreamer chose to go down. Stations and tunnels are among the most reported urban dream settings.
