The absence of a split is the observation worth having. This database repeatedly shows the same animal producing opposite reports depending on context, and the dolphin appears not to, which suggests a cultural inheritance strong enough to override context.
That inheritance is recent and traceable: dolphins acquired their current standing in the West largely through twentieth-century film, television and marine parks.
It is a good demonstration that a uniform reading is evidence of a uniform culture rather than of a true meaning.
