Dreaming about bear
Bears are reported as a threat that is not hunting you, which is unusual and is what separates them from the other large predators here. The characteristic report is of an animal that is enormous, close, and not yet decided.

The distinctive feature is ambiguity. Dreamers describe a bear as present and overwhelming without being actively predatory, and they frequently report standing still rather than running.
Where pursuit does occur it follows the standard chase pattern and belongs with that material. What is specific to bears is the standoff: an animal that could and has not.
Size is mentioned unprompted with unusual regularity, and dreamers often correct themselves upward. Bears in dreams are bigger than bears.
A smaller group of reports involves protection rather than threat, usually a bear associated with a person or a place, and those sit closer to the Protector archive than to the rest of this entry.

A charging bear produces panic of a specific and physical kind, and dreamers frequently report waking at the moment of contact.
The standoff version is unpleasant in a slower way. Not knowing is the difficult part, and some dreamers describe it as worse than being chased.
Psychological perspectives
Threat simulation fits, with the caveat that the template being filled is a standoff rather than a pursuit. That is a less commonly modelled scenario and it may be why these reports feel different to the dreamer.
The consistent size inflation is worth noting. Dream objects are not scaled from memory, and a threatening animal being larger than any real one is normal output rather than exaggeration in the retelling.
Where culture is doing the work, it is doing a lot: almost no dreamer has met a bear, and the image arrives complete.
Cultural and historical
The bear appears as ancestor, as kin and as a being to be addressed carefully in a great many northern traditions, including across Sami, Ainu and several Indigenous North American cultures. Several of these involve specific naming practices and are living rather than historical.
The database does not flatten these into one reading. They are distinct traditions with distinct content, and a dreamer outside them is not carrying them.
The European inheritance is different again and much simpler: the bear as raw strength, largely from heraldry and children's stories.
