Dreaming you cannot breathe and waking up gasping
Why do I wake up unable to breathe?
Check your breathing before you interpret anything. This is the one entry in this database most likely to be about your body rather than your mind.
Nasal congestion does this. A heavy duvet does this. Sleeping position does it, and so does alcohol before bed. Rule those out first, because they are easy and they account for a lot of it.
So does obstructive sleep apnoea, in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. It is common, frequently undiagnosed, and treatable. The pattern to watch for is waking gasping or choking, heavy snoring, a dry mouth, waking unrefreshed, and being tired through the day no matter how long you were in bed.
If that describes you, the useful next step is a doctor, not a dream journal. No reading of the symbolism here is worth as much as that appointment.
Where this reads well
Sleep apnoea is very treatable, and people who get it treated describe the change in how they feel during the day as substantial.
Where it is harder
Interpreted symbolically rather than checked, a treatable medical condition goes on being untreated, which is the reason this page leads the way it does.
Worth asking yourself
Do I wake gasping more than occasionally? Do I snore, or has anybody said so? Am I tired during the day regardless of my hours?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
