Not being able to breathe

Dreaming about being smothered or choked

What does it mean to dream about being suffocated?

The version with an agent in it, and the physical causes still come first: bedding over the face, congestion, and position account for a large share of these.

Where those are ruled out, the reports separate from the other two. There is a person or a thing doing it, the dreamer struggles, and being unable to call out is described nearly as often as being unable to breathe. That pairing puts these alongside the cannot-shout and cannot-run material rather than with the medical group.

For anybody with a real experience of being restrained or assaulted, these are not ordinary dreams and should not be read with the rest of this entry. Repeated distressing versions are worth taking to somebody qualified.

The mask entry describes the same suffocation content arriving in a different shape, and the two are worth logging together.

Where this reads well

Little to offer beyond the physical checks, which resolve more of these than any reading does.

Where it is harder

These wake people fully and frequently end the night, which makes the tiredness a real cost on top of the fear.

Worth asking yourself

Was anything over my face? Could I call out? Do I have a real experience behind this?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
