Dreaming about a weight on your chest
What does it mean to dream something is sitting on your chest?
One of the most consistent experiences human beings report, across cultures and across centuries, and it has a name.
The dreamer wakes, cannot move, and feels a crushing weight on the chest, often with a presence in the room. This is sleep paralysis, and the chest-pressure version is its most reported form. Breathing feels obstructed because the muscles that normally do the work are still switched off, which is the state the body is supposed to be in during dreaming sleep.
The old-hag entry covers the figure people describe, and the consistency of that figure across places that never shared a story is the interesting part of it.
Nothing is in the room. The paralysis lifts on its own, usually within a minute or two, and knowing it will is most of what makes it bearable.
Where this reads well
Dreamers who learn the mechanism report the episodes losing most of their terror even while continuing, which is the single most useful thing on this page.
Where it is harder
Unexplained it is genuinely terrifying, and people carry it for years without ever mentioning it, believing it was something else.
Worth asking yourself
Could I move at all? Was I in my actual room? How long did it last?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
