What does it mean when a place changes into another place mid-dream?
The third form and the strangest to describe: the place becomes somewhere else, and the new identity is applied backwards over the earlier part of the dream.
Dreamers report that it had always been the second place, even for the section they experienced as the first. That retroactive rewriting is the notable feature and it has no waking equivalent.
It shows that the label on a setting is not attached to the setting. It is held separately and can be changed, and nothing goes back to check whether the change is consistent with what has already happened, because there is no record to check against.
The same thing happens to people, and the composite-person entry describes it happening to a face mid-conversation.

Among the clearest demonstrations of how loosely dreams hold identity, and dreamers recognise it immediately once described.

The backwards application is what dreamers find impossible to convey, and they frequently give up trying.
