Why does injury not hurt in a dream?
The absence of pain is near universal, and it is the most consistent and most surprising finding about injury in dreams.
Dreamers describe serious wounds, look directly at them, and report no sensation at all. Many only notice the strangeness on waking, because at the time the missing pain raised no question.
Pain is generated poorly in dreams. It is not simply that dreams are gentle; the sensation appears to be one of the things dreaming produces least reliably, in the same category as reading and stable faces.
The looking is what dreamers report instead. Detailed, curious, undisturbed inspection of an injury that should be unbearable, which is a strange thing to have done and an easy thing to miss.

One of the clearest demonstrations of what dreams cannot generate, and dreamers confirm it in their own reports immediately.
Where it is harder
Almost none. The dreams are disturbing on reflection rather than at the time.
