A soldier

Dreaming about combat when you have experienced it

What if I have actually been in a war?

Then this page does not apply, and saying so plainly is the only useful thing it can do.

For veterans, and for people who have lived through war, these dreams are a different matter entirely. Recurrent combat dreams are a recognised feature of post-traumatic stress, and the treatment literature is the relevant one, not this page.

The reports are closer to replay than to imagery: accurate detail, real places, and distress that does not resolve on waking the way ordinary dream fear does.

Imagery rehearsal has real evidence behind it for recurrent nightmares, and it works best delivered properly by somebody qualified. That is what to reach for rather than an interpretation.

Where this reads well

Pointing at effective help is worth more than any reading, and the technique named here genuinely works.

Where it is harder

Nothing on a dream site is a substitute for proper support with this.

Worth asking yourself

Have I lived through this? Is the dream close to the real thing? Is there somebody I can take it to?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
