Dreaming about skin
Skin reports are the ones most likely to have a real physical cause, and the physical question should be asked first. Itching, crawling and heat are all sensations a sleeping body can genuinely produce.

Crawling sensations are the commonest report and are among the more distressing in the database. Dreamers describe something moving under or on the skin, frequently with insects.
Peeling, shedding or coming away is a second group and is described with a detached fascination more often than with fear.
Heat and burning appear in a third, and those are worth checking against the actual sleeping environment before anything else.
Marks, writing or patterns on skin form a small and distinctive group, and dreamers frequently report being unable to read what was written, which the text-instability material covers.

Positive readings
The shedding version is reported by some dreamers as pleasant and renewing rather than alarming, and those reports are calm.
The practical value is again diagnostic: a crawling dream that turns out to be a real itch is solved rather than interpreted.
Difficult readings
The crawling version is genuinely horrible and belongs with the insect and infestation material, which produces disgust rather than fear.
Where it recurs, and particularly where it recurs with real skin symptoms, the physical cause is the thing to pursue.
Psychological perspectives
Somatosensory input during sleep is readily incorporated into dream content, and skin is the largest sensory surface there is. A real itch, a fold in the bedding, a temperature change or a limb going numb can all supply the raw material.
That account is testable by the dreamer, which puts it well ahead of any symbolic reading.
The boundary reading, skin as what separates a person from the world, is available and unfalsifiable, and the entry notes it without endorsing it.
Cultural and historical
Marking the skin, in tattooing, scarification and ritual painting, is a serious and living practice across a great many cultures, with specific meanings that are not interchangeable.
Shedding as renewal comes largely from the snake, which has its own entry and carries the tradition.

Well established: somatosensory stimuli during sleep are incorporated into dream content.
Reasonably supported: the prominence of infestation and multiplication in aversive dream imagery.
Not established: any symbolic meaning for skin.
