Why can I never read a phone or screen in a dream?
A screen is a surface covered in text and fine detail, which is precisely what dreams cannot render. That is the whole explanation and it is not symbolic.
Dreamers describe looking at one and resolving nothing, or finding it completely different on a second look. The text will not hold across two glances, exactly as it will not in a book, on a sign or on a page.
Screens are worth their own record for one practical reason: most people now look at one within seconds of waking, and within seconds of picking one up in a dream. That makes this the reality check most likely to be available.
Look at your phone, look away, look back. If it has changed, you are asleep.
Where this reads well
The most immediately usable check there is, because the object is already in your hand more often than not.
Where it is harder
Where something urgent must be read, the frustration is considerable and dreamers rarely succeed.
Worth asking yourself
Did it change? What was I trying to read? Did I try twice?
