Dreaming about being with someone who has died

What does it mean to dream about spending time with somebody who has died?

The most emotionally powerful reports in this database, and the most consistently described. The person is simply there, the death is not mentioned, and nothing in the dream treats the situation as strange.

The ordinariness is what dreamers report and what they value. Sitting somewhere, a conversation about nothing, a room they both knew. Dreamers rarely report dramatic reunions and frequently report being unable to recall a single word afterwards while recalling the presence exactly.

Whether these dreams are anything more than the mind doing what it does with a person it knew well is not a question dream research can answer, and this page does not pretend otherwise. What can be said is that they are common, usually welcome, and that grieving people describe them as valuable.

Where this reads well

Widely described as comforting, and many dreamers report actively hoping for them.

Where it is harder

The waking is the hard part and it is worth expecting. Several dreamers describe the loss arriving again on waking.

Worth asking yourself

Was the death mentioned? What were we doing? How did I feel at the time rather than after?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
