Dreaming that your phone will not work
What does it mean to dream you cannot use your phone?
Extremely commonly reported, and unusually consistent in its detail across dreamers who have never spoken to each other.
The reported failure is nearly always fine motor rather than mechanical: the keys are pressed and the wrong digits appear, the screen does not respond where it is touched, the number is dialled correctly and connects to somebody else. Dreamers frequently try several times.
Two documented features account for most of it. Dreamed text and numbers do not hold still when looked at twice, which is why the digits change, and intended actions during REM frequently produce no result, which is why the pressing does nothing. Neither requires the dream to be about anything.
Where this reads well
Some dreamers report becoming lucid during this dream, since a phone that will not work is a strong personal dream sign once noticed.
Where it is harder
Where the call is an emergency, the dream is genuinely distressing and is reported as one of the worse common anxiety dreams.

Who was I calling? How many times did I try? Did I notice anything was wrong at the time?
