Music

Dreaming about music you can hear clearly

Why do some people hear music in dreams and others do not?

The frequency difference is the headline. People who play report musical dreams at markedly higher rates, and report them in more detail.

That is the continuity account making a clean prediction and having it confirmed. The farm, chicken and scorpion entries do the same: exposure predicts content, and the prediction holds for an absence as well as a presence.

For everybody else the commonest report is a fragment: a few bars, or a song that was playing, usually one the dreamer knows.

Given how sparingly dreams generate sound at all, music is a demanding thing to ask for, and the reports show it: known material is reproduced and new material is rare.

Where this reads well

An unusually clean confirmation of the exposure account, testable against whether you play.

Where it is harder

None.

Worth asking yourself

Do I play anything? Was it a song I know? How much detail was there?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
