Map

Dreaming about a map you cannot read

Why can I never read a map in a dream?

A map is the worst possible object to hand a dreamer, and it fails on three counts at once.

It is text, which dreams cannot hold still. It is fine detail, which they render worst. And it claims to describe a space that has no underlying model, because dream geography is generated where attention falls and nowhere else.

Dreamers describe recognising it as a map and being unable to resolve anything on it. Not a blur: a map, clearly, with nothing readable on it.

These cluster inside getting-lost dreams, which is exactly where somebody would reach for one, and that is why the frustration is so high.

Where this reads well

One of the strongest reality checks available, and it turns up precisely when a dreamer is already looking hard at something.

Where it is harder

It arrives at the point of maximum need and never helps, which dreamers report as the worst kind of failure.

Worth asking yourself

Did I know it was a map? Could I read anything? Was I lost?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
