Dreaming about a machine you cannot switch off
What does it mean to dream you cannot stop something running?
The characteristic report. Something is running, the dreamer needs it to stop, and no control works.
That is the effort-without-effect finding with an object attached, and it is one of the purer expressions of it because a machine is supposed to obey. A body that will not run can be blamed on the body; a switch that does nothing cannot.
It belongs with the lock that will not catch, the phone that will not dial and the light switch that does nothing: fine interactions that return no feedback because the muscles are switched off.
Dreamers report trying several controls, which is the never-the-same-twice mechanism producing a fresh failure each time.

The clearest form of a very well-described family, precisely because the object should comply.
Where it is harder
Sound and motion that will not stop are reported as genuinely oppressive.
