Dreaming about a letter from somebody who has died

What does it mean to dream you receive a letter from someone who died?

A distinct and well-populated group, and it belongs with the grief material.

The sender is usually known without being stated. No name, no handwriting examined, no return address. The dreamer simply knows, which is the unearned certainty this database describes throughout.

Whether such a dream is contact with the dead is not a question this site can answer and it will not pretend to. What it can say is that the reports are common, are usually described afterwards as comforting, and are a normal part of grieving.

The content almost never survives. Dreamers report knowing it was important and being unable to say what it said, which is the same failure as the diagnosis with no name.

Where this reads well

Frequently reported as valuable even where nothing was read, and dreamers rarely wish they had not had them.

Where it is harder

Wanting the words and not having them is genuinely painful, and no reading fixes that.

Worth asking yourself

How did I know who it was from? Did I read any of it? How did I feel on waking?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
