Knowing you are dreaming

Waking up as soon as you become lucid

Why do I wake up as soon as I realise I am dreaming?

The first thing nearly everybody discovers, and the most common obstacle there is.

The recognition arrives, the excitement arrives with it, and the dream ends. Dreamers report this repeatedly before they get past it, and it is discouraging precisely because the thing that ended it was the success.

What is reported to help is engaging the senses rather than the emotions. Look at something close and hold it. Touch a surface. Some dreamers spin, others rub their hands together, and the common element is giving the dream something specific to keep producing rather than standing there being pleased.

Calm is the practical instruction. Not enthusiasm, not effort, just carrying on with the dream while knowing what it is.

Where this reads well

It passes. Dreamers who keep at it report the dreams lengthening from seconds to minutes, and the techniques above are what they credit.

Where it is harder

Genuinely frustrating early on, and a fair number of people give up at exactly this point.

Worth asking yourself

How long did I hold it? What was I feeling at the moment it went? Did I try to engage with anything?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
