Knowing you are dreaming

Trying to change what happens in a lucid dream

Can you control a lucid dream?

Partly, unevenly, and much less than the popular account suggests, which is worth knowing before trying.

Degrees vary enormously. Some dreamers know and can do nothing at all. Some can act within the dream while it goes its own way. A smaller number can direct it substantially, and even they report the dream pushing back: doors that will not open, people who refuse, a scene that reasserts itself.

Flying is the most attempted and the most reported as difficult. Reading is nearly impossible even lucid, which is what makes it such a dependable check in the first place.

The most common report from experienced dreamers is that steering gently works far better than commanding. Expecting a door to open behind you is described as more effective than willing one into existence in front of you.

Where this reads well

Realistic expectations are the useful thing here, and they are what keep people going past the first disappointing attempts.

Where it is harder

The gap between what people expect and what they get is the main reason they stop, which is a shame given how much of it is achievable with patience.

Worth asking yourself

What did I try? What did the dream do instead? Did anything resist me?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
