Infidelity

Dreaming about an affair with somebody you cannot identify

Why was the other person in the dream a stranger?

Reported constantly and puzzled over more than the infidelity itself. The other person is faceless, unidentified, or somebody the dreamer has no interest in at all and finds absurd on waking.

This is the same construction the mask and faceless-person entries describe. Dreams generate detail only where attention lands, and the identity of a third party is rarely where attention lands. It never had to exist, so it does not.

It also removes the last footing from the literal reading. A dream about an affair with nobody in particular is not information about anybody in particular.

Where this reads well

The absurd version is often the one that breaks the spell, and dreamers report the whole dream becoming easier to dismiss once they notice it.

Where it is harder

Where the other person is somebody real and known, the dream is harder to shake, and the dreamer is often left uncomfortable around them for no reason they can defend.

Worth asking yourself

Could I describe them? Was it anybody real? Did the identity matter in the dream, or only afterwards?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
