Horses appear in dream material far out of proportion to modern contact with them, which is the interesting fact about this entry.
Most people in industrial societies have almost no relationship with horses, and they still show up in reports with some regularity and are described with unusual vividness: size, breath, the sound, the sense of something much stronger than the dreamer being close.
The reports divide by control. Riding well is one dream, being carried at a speed you did not choose is another, and watching a horse from a distance is a third. Those are more different from one another than any of them is from a dream about another animal.

Being carried by a horse that will not stop belongs with the wider family of dreams about a vehicle out of control, and the reports look similar to brake-failure dreams.
Injured or falling horses are reported rarely and are described as disproportionately upsetting.
Psychological perspectives
Continuity does not account for this one, which is worth saying plainly rather than papering over. Most dreamers have little contact with horses, and the frequency and vividness of the reports are not well explained.
The control cluster fits the general anxiety pattern of effort meeting a stronger force, and it is structurally the same as the runaway-vehicle dream.
Cultural and historical
The horse is unusually consistent across traditions, which is rare in this database. Power, war, status and vitality recur from classical material through European folklore to the dream manuals.
Artemidorus treats horses at length and reads them in relation to the dreamer's station, which is his characteristic move and a more careful one than most modern readings.
The apocalyptic horses of Revelation supply a darker strand in the Western inheritance that has nothing to do with any dream and colours the reading anyway.

Animal dreams are more frequent in children and in cultures with more animal contact, which makes the persistence of horse dreams in urban adults an open question rather than a settled one.
Nothing establishes a meaning. The cross-cultural consistency of the power reading is a fact about human societies and their history with horses.
