Forgetting the dream

Remembering more dreams after keeping a journal

Does keeping a dream journal help you remember dreams?

Yes, and it is one of the better documented effects in this whole area, which is why it is stated plainly rather than hedged.

People who begin recording report more dreams within days, and the increase is usually large. What has changed is attention rather than sleep. Recall responds to being expected.

The reports have a shape worth knowing about in advance. Almost nothing for a few days, then fragments, then whole dreams, and often a week or two in a jump that dreamers describe as a switch flipping.

Two things blunt it. Writing later in the day rather than immediately, and only writing the good ones. Recording a dull fragment is what maintains the effect; deciding it is not worth writing is what ends it.

Where this reads well

Genuinely reliable, cheap, and the entry point to everything else this site can do with your dreams.

Where it is harder

Recall of unpleasant dreams rises along with the rest, and some people find that a real cost. It is worth knowing before starting.

Worth asking yourself

How long have I been writing? Am I writing everything, or only the interesting ones? Has the pattern changed since I started?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
