Forgetting the dream

Never remembering your dreams

What does it mean if you never remember your dreams?

It means your recall is low. It does not mean you do not dream.

That distinction is the whole entry. People woken from REM sleep in a laboratory report a dream the great majority of the time, and that includes people who arrive convinced they never dream at all.

So this is not a fact about you and it is not something missing. It is a measurement problem, and it is one of the few things in this database you can actually change.

The things that work are unglamorous. Wake naturally rather than to an alarm where you can. Stay still with your eyes shut for a moment before moving. Do not look at your phone. Write something down even if it is one word, because one word retrieved is worth more than a resolution to try harder tomorrow.

Where this reads well

The most actionable page here. People who start a journal report more dreams within days, and that effect is among the better documented things in the area.

Where it is harder

None, beyond the frustration of the first week, which is normal and passes.

Worth asking yourself

Do I wake to an alarm? What is the first thing I do? Have I ever written one down?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
