Dreaming about fish
Fish dreams are reported less often than dreams of land animals and are unusually consistent in one respect: the water is almost always doing as much work in the report as the fish.

Fish arrive attached to water, and in the reports the two are rarely separable. Dreamers describe the clarity of the water, its depth, and whether they could see the bottom, and the fish is frequently secondary to that.
The distinctive reports are about catching, about a fish out of water, and about seeing something large moving below the surface without being able to make it out. That last is one of the more unsettling images people describe and it belongs as much with the water entry as with this one.
Fish in a tank or a bowl are reported separately again, usually with a note about the container and often about neglect.

Positive readings
Catching a fish is reported favourably and is read as provision in most of the traditions that treat it.
Clear water with visible fish is described as calm and pleasant, and dreamers frequently mention the light.
Difficult readings
A dead fish is reported soberly. A fish out of water is reported with real distress and is described in terms of helplessness.
Something large below the surface is the unsettling version and is one of the clearest cases in the database of an image being frightening because it is unresolved rather than because it is threatening.
Psychological perspectives
The unconscious reading is Jungian in origin, and its ubiquity online is a good illustration of how quickly a twentieth-century theory becomes stated as an ancient truth.
The reports themselves support something narrower and more interesting: the emotional charge tracks visibility. Clear water and visible fish are calm; obscured water and half-seen movement are not, whatever is in them.
Cultural and historical
Fish carry provision and abundance readings across a wide range of traditions, which is unsurprising for a food source.
Classical Islamic manuals treat fish extensively, with readings depending on size, number and freshness, and generally favourably.
The Christian fish symbol contributes a separate strand to the Western inheritance that has nothing to do with dreams and colours the reading anyway.

No research establishes any meaning for fish in dreams.
What is documented is the general finding that emotional intensity in dreams tracks uncertainty and threat ambiguity, which fits the half-seen-shape reports better than any symbolic reading.
