Falling

Dreaming about falling slowly

Why does falling feel slow in some dreams?

A slow fall behaves less like an accident and more like a descent. People describe having time to look around, to think, sometimes to be almost calm.

This overlaps with the motor phenomena that show up across the whole dream vocabulary, running without speed, punching without force. Dream physics is not modelled; it is constructed, and it does not have to obey the rules that make a fall fast.

Where reports get interesting is that the slow version is much more often described as not frightening. Several people describe it as the point at which they realised they were dreaming.

Where this reads well

Slow falls are a well-known route into lucidity, precisely because the strangeness is noticeable while it is happening.

Where it is harder

Little to flag. A slow fall is one of the least distressing versions of this dream.

Worth asking yourself

Did I have time to think? Did it occur to me that this was a dream?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
