Falling

Dreaming about falling and never landing

What does it mean to dream you fall forever?

Distinct from the sleep-onset jolt: a sustained fall inside a dream narrative, which does not resolve.

The non-resolution is characteristic. Dreams are poor at completing high-arousal sequences and frequently end or switch scene at the point of impact, which is also why the "you die if you land" folklore has survived. People rarely land, so nobody has evidence against it.

Where this reads well

A minority of dreamers report the fall becoming flight, which is one of the more remarkable transitions people describe.

Where it is harder

Sustained helplessness without resolution, which is exhausting rather than acutely frightening.

Worth asking yourself

Did it end, or did I wake? Was there any point where it stopped being frightening?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
