Why do faces change in dreams?
Among the most reported and most unsettling things in dream content, and it has the same cause as everything else on this page.
The face shifts while the dreamer watches, ages, becomes somebody else, or will not resolve into anything. Dreamers describe looking harder and making it worse, which is the reliable detail.
Faces are the most attended thing in dream content and the least stable, and looking harder is precisely the demand a dream cannot meet. It is the same failure as text that will not hold still, applied to the thing human beings are most sensitive to in the world.
Faces and text are the two best reality checks there are, for exactly this reason. What is unbearable in the dream is genuinely useful once it is recognised.
Where this reads well
Practically valuable. Alongside hands and reading, this is one of the three things that most reliably tells a dreamer they are asleep.
Where it is harder
The unease is disproportionate and hard to convey afterwards, because nothing happened beyond a face not staying still.

Did looking harder change it? Did it become anybody in particular? When did I notice?
