Dying

Dreaming about dying and feeling calm

Why was I calm about dying in my dream?

The report dreamers find hardest to sit with, and the calm is the reason.

The moment of dying arrives and there is no fear in it. Dreamers describe acceptance, sometimes relief, occasionally something close to pleasure, and then wake disturbed by the calm rather than by the death. Several say they would have preferred to be frightened.

This is worth naming because of what people conclude from it. The calm is not a wish, not a readiness and not a sign of anything. Emotion in dreams is generated alongside the content rather than caused by it, which is why it can be entirely inappropriate to what is happening and feel completely natural at the time.

Where somebody is genuinely struggling with wanting to be alive, that is a matter for a person rather than a page, and it is worth saying out loud to somebody who can help.

Where this reads well

The reports are frequently described afterwards as peaceful, and a fair number of dreamers say the dream reduced their fear of dying rather than adding to it.

Where it is harder

The self-suspicion is the harm here. Dreamers read the calm as evidence about themselves, and it is not.

Worth asking yourself

What did I feel at the moment? What did I feel about that on waking? Is there anything I should say to somebody?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
