Dreaming about deer
Deer reports are almost entirely about a moment of mutual stillness. The dreamer and the animal see each other, neither moves, and then it goes. Dreamers describe this with more significance than the content appears to warrant.

Injury reports are a distinct and much rarer group, usually involving a road, and they produce strong distress.

Almost none, except the injury reports, which are disproportionately distressing and which dreamers often connect to something they have actually seen.
Where a deer is being hunted in the dream, the reports change register entirely and belong with the pursuit material.
Psychological perspectives
Mutual gaze without threat is unusual in dream content, and this is one of the few reliable producers of it. Most animal encounters in dreams resolve into pursuit or avoidance.
Continuity is moderate to strong. Many dreamers have seen deer, and the settings reported match where they see them.
