Dreaming about a dead relative and forgetting they died
Why do you sometimes not remember someone has died in a dream?
In the dream it is unremarkable that they are there. The knowledge that they died is simply not available, and everything proceeds normally, until you wake up and it is.
The waking is the difficult part of this dream, and people report it as a second loss. That reaction is extremely common and it is not a sign that grief is going badly.
There is a plain mechanism here worth knowing: the prefrontal regions that would flag the contradiction are relatively deactivated during REM. This is the same reason dreams generally go unquestioned while they are happening.
Where this reads well
For the length of the dream, they were simply there and nothing was wrong. Many people describe that as worth the waking.
Where it is harder
Waking from this can be genuinely painful. If it recurs during acute grief, be gentle with yourself about it, and consider whether daily journalling is helping or hurting just now.
Worth asking yourself
What were we doing? At what point did I know?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
