Dreaming you cannot remember somebody's name
Why can I not remember names in dreams?
The commonest of the four failures in this record, and dreamers describe it with the exact frustration of the tip of the tongue.
The person is in front of them. They know them. The name is not there, and reaching for it makes it worse.
A name is the most specific possible piece of information, and specific information is what dreams generate least reliably. It fails in the same way unreadable text fails and for the same reason: it would have to be produced exactly, and nothing is holding it.
This is not a sign of anything about waking memory. Anybody genuinely worried about their memory while awake should raise that with a doctor, and it has nothing to do with this.
Where this reads well
The link to the reading failures usually lands, and it removes a worry dreamers frequently carry.
Where it is harder
The social panic is disproportionate and dreamers report it as the worst part of an otherwise ordinary dream.
Worth asking yourself
Did I know them otherwise? Did reaching for it help? Does text hold still in my dreams?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
