Waking certain someone is in the room
Why do you wake up sure someone is there?
The presence is felt before anything is seen, and in a large share of accounts nothing is ever seen at all. People describe knowing where in the room it is, and sometimes which way it is facing, without any visual information.
That ordering matters. A sense of presence arriving before perception is a documented feature of the sleep-wake boundary rather than an inference from a shape in the dark, which is why the certainty is so much stronger than the evidence for it.
It is the most common entry point to everything else in this archive. Where a figure is subsequently described, the presence almost always came first.
What the reports agree on
Reports agree closely on the sequence: presence, then orientation, then sometimes a figure. That consistency is what makes this a documentable pattern rather than a collection of frights.
Where they differ, and what to be careful of
Certainty is not evidence. The feeling of knowing something is there is generated by the state, and it feels identical whether or not anything is.
Worth recording if this was yours
Did I sense it before I looked? Could I say where it was without seeing it?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
