What do people report about a figure at the side of the bed?
Distinct from the foot-of-the-bed position and reported less often, but with a consistent difference: side-of-bed accounts far more frequently describe the figure as leaning over or looking down.
Proximity changes the character of the reports. The foot-of-the-bed figure is described as watching; the bedside figure is described as attending to the sleeper, and the fear in these accounts is correspondingly higher.
A supine sleeper's peripheral vision covers the bedside poorly, which may be why these accounts more often describe sensing rather than seeing.
