REM rebound: why the dreams come back louder

Suppress REM for a night and the brain takes it back with interest. This is behind a lot of "why were my dreams so intense last night?"

REM behaves as though the brain keeps a running account of it. Deprive someone of REM (by drugs, by alcohol, by fragmented or shortened sleep) and the next opportunity brings more REM than usual, arriving sooner and lasting longer.

That is REM rebound, and it is the single most common explanation for an unexpectedly intense night of dreaming.

The usual causes

  • Alcohol. It suppresses REM in the first half of the night and is followed by a rebound in the second. This is why a heavy evening so often ends with vivid, unpleasant dreaming towards morning, and poor-quality sleep overall despite falling asleep quickly.
  • Stopping a medication that suppressed REM. Several classes do. Withdrawal can bring a period of markedly more vivid dreams and nightmares.
  • Catching up after short sleep. Sleep debt is repaid unevenly, and REM takes its share back.

Why this matters for a journal

A spike in nightmare frequency has causes that are worth ruling out before reaching for meaning. The sleep log records alcohol, medication and sleep duration for exactly this reason: on the pattern dashboard, a nightmare cluster that lines up with three heavy nights is a very different finding from one that does not.

The medical line

If you are dreaming vividly after starting, changing or stopping a prescribed medication, that is worth mentioning to whoever prescribed it. It is a known effect for several drug classes and often manageable. It is not a reason to stop taking anything on your own.
