Beta waves and active waking

The band of ordinary alert thought, and of the wired, over-alert state that keeps people awake.

Where they appear

Beta is what you would expect from a brain doing something: attending, concentrating, problem-solving, talking. It is the ordinary background of the waking day.

Why a sleep site cares

Two reasons.

Beta where it should not be. Persistent fast activity at sleep onset is associated with the experience of lying awake with a busy mind. People with insomnia show more high-frequency activity around sleep onset than good sleepers. That is a correlation rather than a cause, but it maps onto the subjective report closely.

It sets up the contrast with REM. REM's EEG looks much more like alert waking than like deep sleep, mixed frequency, low amplitude. This is why REM was originally called paradoxical sleep: by the EEG it resembles being awake, while the body is paralysed.

The practical version

Nothing here supports a technique. It supports an observation people already have: the state that keeps you awake feels like thinking, and it looks like thinking on the recording too.
