What lucid practice costs your sleep
The techniques that work best are the ones that interrupt your night. This page is about the trade, because most lucid material never mentions it.

The better-supported induction techniques share a feature: they involve waking during the night on purpose.
That is not free.
The cost
- Fragmented sleep. WBTB deliberately breaks the night. Doing it several times a week produces the effects of any other fragmented sleep: daytime tiredness, worse mood, worse concentration.
- Lost sleep at the wrong end. The waking window falls in the second half of the night, which is the REM-rich half. Staying up too long during it removes sleep you were about to use.
- Effortful sleep onset. Techniques that require sustained attention while falling asleep can turn going to sleep into a task, and for some people that becomes a durable problem with sleep-onset insomnia.
- More sleep paralysis, as above.
Why the tracker asks
The lucid tracker records sleep disruption alongside success, deliberately and prominently. A tracker where the win is easier to log than the cost produces data that flatters the practice, and after a month you would have a record of your lucid dreams and no record of what they cost.
The dashboard reports success by technique and lets you see it against your sleep log.
A reasonable way to do this
- Do not run techniques every night. Two or three nights a week is a common practitioner compromise and leaves the rest of the week intact.
- Not before demanding days. Do not run WBTB before something that needs you sharp.
- Stop during a hard period. If you are ill, stressed or already short of sleep, this is exactly the wrong time.
- Watch the log. If sleep quality is trending down over a month, the practice is costing more than it is returning.
The line worth holding
Sleep is not optional and lucid dreaming is. If the two conflict, the choice is not close.
